Medpick Announces Its Collaboration With 100 Pharmacies In Bangalore

18-8-2016

After just a few months of being in business, Medpick has already partnered with over 100 pharmacies and plans on partnering with at least 2000 pharmacies by the end of this year. A web and mobile application, Medpick is disrupting the pharmacy sector by connecting customers to pharmacies right in their neighbourhood. The customers can place orders for all of their medication, wellness and medical equipment needs and Medpick connects them to their local pharmacies to help them find their medicines with ease.

Being the third largest in the terms of volume and the thirteenth largest in terms of value the Indian pharmaceuticals market is growing rapidly. It is expected to grow over 15% per annum, reaching up to US$ 55 billion between 2015 and 2020. The Indian Pharma market is dominated by branded generics constituting nearly 65% to 80% of the market. Coordination and integration have become vital needs for the Indian pharmaceutical market as the industry is hugely fragmented.

Medpick was launched because Ranjit noticed that there was a significant market opportunity and an unmet need in the pharmaceutical industry in India. The objective of Medpick has always been to give its customers the best and at a fair price, owing to this, Medpick has rapidly been trying to improve its services and plans to launch its app in a short span of time. The app has been launched on both Android and iOS.

The story

A few months ago Ranjit, Medpick’s founder, was in the United States when he heard his father suffered a stroke. His mother had to take care of him all by herself. During this ordeal, she found it extremely difficult to procure the medicines required for his treatment. She would often have to visit at least 5-6 pharmacies before she could find all the medicines and Ranjit would have to co-ordinate with the pharmacies on a daily basis to get the right medicines on time.

After this ordeal he found out that it was not just his mother facing this problem, but a large chunk of the Indian population. This is when he got together with Narotam (Co-founder) and decided to do something about it. After numerous experiments and brainstorming they realised that they needed to create something in the e-commerce sector without losing a human touch. This is how Medpick came into existence.

Dr. Ranjit Makam
Founder & CEO

Dr. Ranjit Makam

Physician, public health professional, teacher & health administrator are only some of the roles that Ranjit has played so far. Usually in the habit of recognising a problem and working on it until solved, time has shown he’ll do so even if it means sacrificing his job. While pursuing his Masters degree from the University of Pittsburgh, he chose to research routine immunization in Nigeria and means to improve its administration and monitoring, ending up with a few solutions that could be implemented with minimal effort. This research of his will soon be published as a book by Lambert.

In the year 2005, when Ranjit met his now business partner Narotam, he was a practicing physician and they faced a common problem; they found it extremely difficult to find a new place to holiday at every month. To sort this out, they started an online travel portal called ‘Holidaydial’ and brought together about 30 resorts in Karnataka on the same platform. The market wasn’t ready. Having started before the meteoric rise of e-commerce, the usage and understanding of internet wasn’t that strong in India. At this time he took a break from work to travel and explore India and he was at it for a good 6 months. Being the avid traveller that he is, all he wanted to do was mark-off destinations from his go-to list.

Ranjit once visited the Caribbean for a UNDP volunteer program for HIV prevention and treatment and liked it there so much that he decided to take up a part time job. He was soon island-hopping and working in medical universities as a professor as he enjoyed teaching students who were aspiring doctors.

 Ms. Soujanya Parvataneni
Cofounder

Ms. Soujanya Parvataneni

Soujanya was transformed into a doctorpreneur during her journey to achieve the American Dream. The need for money to fund her stay in America for a long period of time and weak support from her family, made her participate with her friends in many initiatives. Her participation in an initiative for being a marketplace seller on Amazon quickly generated half a million dollars which had otherwise done a paltry $60,000 the previous year.

She has participated in many projects in the healthcare domain and one such project was to create an application for people with special care needs which unfortunately did not receive any funding, because the size of target audience wasn't big enough. But in the process she got an opportunity to work with her future team which included Ranjit. She was so impressed with the concept of Medpick that she came on board the very first day. She has helped structure, conceptualize, plan, and collaborate Medpick with international distributors.
